f Role
:
Seasonal Park Rangers typically work six months of the year or less and provide visitor services, protect park resources, and enhance use through enforcement, education, maintenance, work on natural resource projects, and assistance with medical and other incidents. Because our Rangers wear many different hats such as educators, officers, and medics, Rangers need to exercise good judgment and be comfortable with low-key to highly stressful and challenging situations.
The starting pay for this position is $22.20 – $27.10 hourly, commensurate with experience.
Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Patrol parks through motorized and non-motorized means to protect public safety and park resources; perform visual surveillance and assessment of the use of park facilities to ensure compliance.
Ensure permit compliance and manage conflicts between visitors; issue warnings and citations for violations of municipal park ordinances; may need to appear in court if required.
Protect parks and their natural resources through resource management practices.
Monitor parks facilities to ensure that both natural and manufactured hazards are identified and corrected.
Interpret rules and regulations relative to the facility/park and its condition and interpret information about the park system and natural resources; assure public safety, park security and resource protection by providing education to park visitors to encourage the proper use and enjoyment of urban and mountain parks.
Report hazardous conditions which might interfere with safe usage of facility/park, report accidents to proper authorities and respond appropriately to coordinate and assist with medical emergencies and other incidents.
Provide information to the public about facility and park resources; assist facility users in resolving problems and complaints concerning facility/park quality, availability and the actions of other users.
Interact with the public to increase awareness of parks rules and regulations and act as a community advocate; communicate with diverse and multi-lingual community members, represent the department at various public events.
Perform daily park operation requirements, which may include park maintenance (e.g., trash, bathrooms, landscaping), natural resource projects and signage; safely operate powered equipment (e.g., chainsaws, weed eaters) and hand tools (e.g., sledgehammers, pick mattocks, round point shovels, rock bars, loppers, mini sledge)
Work collaboratively and cooperatively with teams to accomplish large and small tasks (e.g., agencies, partners, law enforcement, fire/EMS, wildlife agencies); lead volunteers, youth corps, or staff on work projects (e.g., trail work)
Use various computer programs to create logs and reports; use GPS units to track and document field work.
Work long days while remaining safe, positive, and focused; work in inclement weather conditions and stand/walk continuously for long periods of time.

Minimum requirements

Must have a valid drivers’ license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
Acceptable background information, including criminal history, is required as well.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
High school diploma or GED.
Previous experience or education in security, law enforcement, rule enforcement or other compliance work and/or experience in Parks, Recreation, Open Space or Natural Resources or a similar field.

Knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of Colorado and Boulder County.
Experienced environmental educator and naturalist.
Proactive communication including written communication skills.
Independent and self-motivated; ability to complete tasks without direct supervision.
Ability to organize and prioritize competing requests for your time and attention.
Excellent people skills including conflict resolution.
Hiking and mountain biking skills.
Resource stewardship education.
CPR certification.
De-escalation experience and or training.
Physical Requirements:
Due to the nature of work, sufficient physical stamina and strength are needed to:
Working a variable schedule, including nights or evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Stand or walk for most of a shift.
Frequent sitting to perform designated office tasks and to survey park for hazards and potential problems; constant standing and walking over uneven terrain in all weather conditions to address hazards and potential park violations with public; occasional running to address emergency situations.
Frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, balancing, reaching overhead and below shoulder, and twisting to perform park maintenance and other related duties; occasional crawling and climbing to perform various park duties.
Frequent light and firm grasp to safely use tools and equipment; constant fine manipulation and handling to perform maintenance and other duties.
Occasional step up/down from vehicles and stairs; constant actuate mechanism to safely operate equipment; normal near and far acuity to observe park for potential hazards and maintenance issues, and hearing to communicate with public, groups, and staff.
Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
Criteria for use of Background Information in Selection Process:
Demonstrated personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment as shown in applicant’s criminal history, background, and motor vehicle record, and use of drugs and alcohol. Applicants who use, possess, distribute or grow marijuana or medical marijuana, and/or own, operate, or have any interest in a marijuana dispensary will be disqualified.
Preference will be given to applicants who have no history of use, sale or possession of illegal substances. In addition to background, criminal and driving record information, a drug screening will be used after a conditional job offer is made to further evaluate the stated criteria and to provide supplementary information for the items listed below.
The following will disqualify any applicant from consideration for employment before or after the conditional employment offer is made:
Any felony conviction.
Any commission of a felony in the previous 60 months (five years), including felonious drug use or possession.
Any commission of non-traffic related misdemeanor within the previous 36 months (three years).
Any convictions and/or protective order(s) issued for domestic violence offenses which would preclude an individual from being around firearm(s).
The use, sale, possession, or transfer of any controlled substance including marijuana or medical marijuana will disqualify an applicant from this position. Applicants must be able to pass a drug screening at time of a conditional job offer.
Eight points or three moving violation convictions, or a suspended, restricted, or revoked license in the previous 24 months (two years).
Any false or untrue statements, or material omissions in the application and related paperwork or during the selection process.
Any other information which clearly demonstrates a lack of personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment as appropriate for employment in a public safety position.
