Overview of Role

Under general supervision the Wetland and Riparian Ecologist will support and assist in the department’s Wetland and Riparian Ecology Program. In collaboration with other ecologists, the Wetland and Riparian Ecologist’s work includes: conserving, protecting, restoring, managing, and monitoring wetland resources on city-owned and city-managed lands; conducting year round field work to map, monitor and assess wetland resources managed by the program; providing design, research, and analysis to manage, protect, and evaluate wetland and riparian resources; and providing technical assistance to the city and department in the management of wetland and riparian resources on OSMP properties.

The starting pay for this position is $32.49 – $39.71/hour, commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Work

to manage wetland and riparian resources

Collaborate with Senior Wetland and Riparian Ecologist to develop and implement wetland and riparian ecology program projects identified in OSMP plans.
Collaborate with OSMP department staff to implement best management practices for recreational, scenic, agricultural, and conservation projects to support wetland and riparian program goals.
Develop relationships and provide exceptional service to internal and external partners through careful listening and understanding of partner issues and by communicating research findings, proposals, specifications, and project statuses to ensure multiple management objectives are being met.
Understand departmental business practices and help develop and ensure contractor compliance with contract terms.

2. Provide technical

for management
and land use planning

Participate as wetland and riparian resource expert in departmental planning efforts, which may include Area Management Plans, Integrated Site Plans, Resource Plans, etc.
Provide technical review of internal and external project designs, permits, and leases and make recommendations for improvements to better protect wetland and riparian resources.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal wetland and ecological resource regulatory requirements for department work; apply for and obtain wetland and ecological resource related permits on behalf of the department for departmental projects.
Provide technical expertise to other city departments to support the City’s Stream, Wetland, and Water Body Ordinance and protect wetland and riparian resources across the city.

3. Conduct mapping, monito
ring, and assessment of wetland and riparian resources

Conduct vegetation mapping of wetland and riparian areas using the national vegetation classification system.
Help to develop a monitoring and assessment strategy for OSMP wetland and riparian resources.
Work as part of a team conducting research and analysis on complex issues related to wetland and riparian ecology; help coordinate and direct studies done by contractors or independent researchers on OSMP managed lands.
Participate in the collection, management, and analysis of wetland and riparian field data.
Develop professional written information related to wetland and riparian ecology.

4. Perform

Develop and conduct informational and interpretive presentations to educational institutions, organizations, and the general public.
Participate in professional organizations related to wetland and riparian ecology and practice, including attending/speaking at local, state, and/or federal conferences and meetings.

5. Other

Perform related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Use all required safety equipment and follow all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Report all accidents and damage to city property.

Organization Structure

: Senior Wetland and Riparian Ecologist (P2)

SUPERVISION: none; may lead seasonal field crews, contractors, volunteers, and interns.

Required Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in wetland ecology, riparian ecology, natural resource management, ecology, botany, biology, hydrology, environmental science, water resources, or related field or demonstrated additional experience with the background, theory and fundamentals of ecological science.
A minimum of two years of work experience in the field of wetland or riparian ecology.
Experience in the design and analysis of research studies using a variety of inventory and monitoring tools including ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, and data analysis software.
Physical ability and willingness to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in adverse weather and field conditions.
Ability and willingness to attend evening meetings and work early or late hours as necessary for field work.
Ability to use all safety equipment.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and having and maintaining an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Preferred Qualifications – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:

Advanced degree in wetland ecology, riparian ecology, natural resource management, ecology, botany, biology, hydrology, environmental science, water resources, or related field
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with wetland and riparian ecology, preferably in the Western High Plains and/or Rocky Mountain Front Range Foothills ecosystems.
Experience conducting wetland delineations and obtaining federal and local wetland permits.
Demonstrated ability to correctly identify Rocky Mountain front Range plants and/or the ability to use a dichotomous plant identification key to identify wetland and riparian vegetation.
Strong proficiency with ArcGIS.
Experience interpreting construction plans and specifications.
