General Purpose

The Commerce City Police Department fosters and actively engages in community-based policing initiatives that promote a standard of excellence in providing police services in Commerce City and the region. The Commerce City Police Department is hiring the most qualified candidates who can demonstrate the personal character and competency that will contribute to the Department’s success. The most qualified candidates will be dedicated to service of others over self, will have experience or an articulable understanding of the community-based policing philosophy, can demonstrate their ability to communicate and problem solve effectively, and can work collaboratively in a team environment. As a Background Investigator, you will be assigned to the Support Services Division under the direct supervision of a Police Commander. You will be responsible for ensuring Departmental compliance with policy and procedures, and state and federal laws and regulations; and, maintaining the high standards and integrity of the Commerce City Police Department through the complete, efficient and proper background investigation of police department candidates. Upon hire, you will be assigned to the Training and Recruiting Unit as a Part-time Background Investigator.
Hiring pay for this position is $25.00/hour Part-time HOW TO APPLY All applicants must complete an online application to be considered for the position. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Conducts thorough and complete background investigations according to department policies, applicable laws, and procedural requirements
Assists in the investigations related to professional standards of law enforcement personnel
Obtains proper information release documents
Contacts and conducts investigative interviews
Develops and pursues lines of inquiry
Reviews submitted application materials for completeness and requests additional information as needed
Reviews and analyzes personal application materials
Gathers and reviews appropriate data from a variety of resources related to the background investigation
Prepares required documentation related to the findings of the investigation
Responds to appropriate requests for information
Interviews appropriate contacts to obtain and verify background information
Works with hiring managers
Track and report investigative activity, mileage and hours according to department procedures
Assists outside agencies as needed to provide background information regarding pervious applicant background investigation
Writes comprehensive reports
Maintains schedules of required backgrounds
Creates an inclusive environment by acknowledging the difference, perspectives and ideas of others.
Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Colorado driver’s license with a good driving record
At least two years of progressively responsible experience conducting employment background investigations in a government or investigative agency; or,
At least four years’ experience as a paid peace officer conducting criminal investigations; or,
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) approved Background Investigator Course
Bilingual in Spanish

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of professional standards and mandates governing law enforcement personnel certification and rules, procedures, and best practices of the law enforcement profession
Knowledge of pertinent criminal and labor-related Federal and State laws
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methodologies of investigation and research, including interviewing techniques, conflict management, and negotiation
Knowledge of related software at an intermediate level utilizing MS Word
Ability to effectively plan, organize, and coordinate investigative results
Ability to research, develop and administer complex solutions to problems in law enforcement
Ability to analyze information and recommend solutions to issues
Ability to communicate accurately, concisely, and clearly both in writing and speech
Ability to communicate complex information in written format that is easily understood
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality in regards to work performed
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions using a variety of concrete and abstract variables
Ability to make independent judgments in the absence of supervision
Excellent organization skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with staff, peers, management and community members

Driving: May drive a personal or City vehicle in the normal course of assignments

Language skills: Reads, interprets and analyzes technical documents, government regulations, and professional journals; writes reports, business correspondence, procedures and proposals; presents information and responds to questions from large and small groups of employees
Physical activities: Sits most of the time, but may walk, stand, stoop, bend, or squat for short periods of time; hand and finger dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment and computer keyboard
Lifting: May involved lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs for short periods of time
Vision and hearing: Must be able see and read paper and electronic documents; must be able to answer telephones, hear conversation and respond to verbal inquiries

Recreation Center Membership: Employees are eligible for a membership to the Commerce City Recreation Center for $5.00 per year. Employees can also purchase golf merchandise at discounted prices. Eligibility for Pay Increases: Employees are eligible for a pay increase around the time of their annual appraisal following a successful evaluation.
