The thirteen-week-long program for the intern at Mount Rainier will be focused on trail deficiencies on the Longmire and Paradise area trails. The intern will learn about the environmental effects on local trails and challenges in maintaining visitor access. The intern will then participate in the process to correct tread issues helping to facilitate the restoration of trail through clearing vegetation from the trail corridor, replacing culverts, installing drain bars, repairing retaining walls and adding tread material where necessary. As described this position Work involves physical labor including lifting and carrying, and frequent use of hand tools. The intern will occasionally work in exposed settings with rough terrain, including some at high elevation (around 6000 feet).

Member Responsibilities:
Ensure project, crew community, basecamp, and general safety standards are upheld; full engagement is expected in all work projects and community activities
Interfacing with general public and partner organizations in a manner that reflects positively upon the crew, organization, and agency

Member Qualifications:
Required skills include a valid driver`s license; ability and willingness to undergo a required criminal history background check; high level of maturity and ability to work independently with minimal supervision; basic knowledge and background in trail maintenance; good physical condition; and ability to perform duties in the outdoors, in all types of weather and terrain variances. Desired skills include experience working in field settings and/or leading volunteers; experience building and maintaining trails; and certification in wilderness first aid and CPR.

Compensation amounts:
– $1100 – one time RT travel allowance
– $200 – weekly living allowance

$650 Reimbursable Duty Related allowance

AmeriCorps eligible ($1,678 education award)

All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes

Conditions of Employment
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants will be required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined in SCA’s COVID Management plan, which can be found here.

Location Description

Field work will often be remote in nature. Cell service is virtually non-existent within the park.

Training Provided

General trails training will be provided, including use of necessary tools, equipment, & standards for trail construction @Mount Rainier National Park.
Gloves, hard hats, vests, safety goggles, and other personal protective equipment will be provided.
