Duties
Through classroom instruction and guidance, Teachers establish a learning environment in which students can develop their ability to make rational and informed decisions relevant to their needs.
Through classroom instruction and guidance, Teachers promote opportunities for students to develop rapport, interrelationships, self-discipline, and a positive self-image.
Instructs students in the following areas: reading, language, writing, mathematics, life skills, computer literacy, general educational development program, human development, and social studies.
Responsible for planning courses of instruction and lesson plans based on the development program and general curriculum guidelines in effect.
Use teaching methods and techniques appropriate for the skill level being taught, allowing for adaptions to permit individual differences in interests and ability and improve the quality of instruction.
Evaluates academic progress through the use of a variety of relevant evaluative methods/instruments and provides constructive criticism, advice and guidance to students.
Plans field trips closely related to topic(s) studied in class, which may require employees to operate Government-owned or leased vehicles.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management’s General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Incumbent must have a valid Secondary Teaching License and must be attached to this application.
Basic Requirement:GS-1710:Bachelor’s degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled, i.e., elementary or secondary learning level. For secondary school teaching positions, applicants must also have had at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction.
OR
Combination of education and experience – Applicants who have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s degree but who do not meet the specific course requirements shown above meet minimum qualification requirements if they have completed at least one full academic year of professional teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level as appropriate to the position to be filled. Professional teaching experience is defined as full and primary responsibility for the instruction of assigned students under general supervision in a recognized or accredited school or other accredited educational institution. This includes responsibility for preparation and presentation of lessons and the evaluation of students’ progress throughout the learning period, including a determination of the student’s success or failure according to established criteria.
OR
Teacher certification or licensure in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States with a secondary endorsement which must be attached to the application.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is defined as most of the following:
Teaching subjects such as reading, language, writing, mathematics, life skills, computer literacy, general educational development program, human development, and social studies;
Assisting in creating a teaching environment that provided and promoted opportunities for students to develop rapport, interrelationships, self-discipline, and a positive self-image; and
Experience in developing teaching learning plans and activities, including adapting instructional materials and methods.
OR
Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree with coursework directly related to the position being filled;
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
