Purpose: The Co-Director of College Counseling will have a warm and personal approach to meeting
students’ and families’ needs. They will contribute to a culture of rapport and collaboration and will guide
families through the successful transition to post-secondary education. This positive person utilizes
extraordinary interpersonal and organizational skills to ensure the success of the college counseling
program.

orientation/field trips, sitting at lunch tables, assisting with carpool, hut trips, and Ski Wednesdays
(or alternative winter outdoor activities). You are ready to participate fully in the life of the K-12
school
A person who fosters an inclusive workplace built on equitable policies and procedures. You are also
able to engage a diverse team of co-workers and students
Outstanding communicator. You can communicate effectively with parents, students, co-workers,
and faculty in a variety of mediums in a professional and timely manner
Ready to attend and participate at related meetings and assist with afternoon/evening programs;
some of which may occur outside of the school day
Actively promoting the mission of the school
Committed to pursuing professional development as well as being a life-long learner
4 year Bachelor’s Degree required
o Masters Degree and/or Counseling Degree highly desired
Significant college counseling experience in independent secondary schools
Experienced with both college admissions and secondary school college counseling
Demonstrated counseling skills beyond college admissions extending to the context of family
dynamics
A willingness to learn and counsel in the context of the unique culture of Vail Mountain School
Knowledgeable about alternative summer and gap year programming
Confident in your ability to work with students, teachers and registrar to create and submit school
documents to colleges and universities for successful application completion
Proven knowledge base of independent schools as well as U.S. and international
colleges/universities, and the ability to reasonably predict college admissions decisions
Passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion and their integration into our school
What You Will Do:
Meet with students individually and with families throughout the college search
Lead college counseling seminars to second-semester juniors and first-semester seniors
Advise students on course selection and its impact on the college selection process
Write personal, unique, and accurate letters of recommendation for the graduating class and advise
faculty in their writing of recommendations
Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with college admission officers
Host college admissions representatives on campus (or virtually, as needed)
Represent Vail Mountain School in professional associations; commit to professional growth and
development by membership in NACAC, RMACAC, ACCIS, and other professional organizations,
and by attending their conferences.
Visit colleges and universities year round to learn about their admissions practices and to gain
knowledge for identifying good fits for individual students.
Work closely with Student Support Services to understand and address a student’s individual
learning profile and accommodations
Collaborate with your co-college counselor to accomplish the following tasks as you work to develop
a two person team serving the office of college counseling
Work with Director of Communications on annual publications and oversee maintenance of
the college counseling portion of the school’s website
Establish and maintain yearly budget for the college counseling office
Evaluate, adjust, and expand the college counseling program each year
Manage digital College Counseling platforms (SCOIR, College Kickstart, Common
Application, UCAS)
Prepare college admissions reports for the Board of Trustees and administrative team and
give an annual end-of-year report to the Board
Plan and coordinate regular informational meetings and communication for families on
topics related to the college search and application process
Create, plan, and host 9-12 programming events and workshops
Support standardized testing efforts with Vail Mountain School as a test site. Coordinate
standardized testing as needed.
Attend and work with department chairs, deans of student life, and division directors to
ensure curricular and policy alignment.
In conjunction with the division director and staff psychologist plan and execute senior
seminar
