The Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS) seeks an accomplished scientist and dynamic and strategic leader as the next Vice President for Science. The Vice President serves as DMNS’ chief scientific officer and reports to the CEO of the Museum. The Vice President will come to a respected institution, known for groundbreaking research, that is strongly supported and engaged with the local community; financially sound; organizationally nimble, and ambitious for its future. DMNS possesses the resources and the organizational culture to allow the next Vice President to have the opportunity to experiment with initiatives and creative ideas, and to push the boundaries of what scientific research looks like at a contemporary and innovative museum.
Established in 1900 as the Colorado Museum of Natural History, DMNS is a place of learning and engagement, where scientific research is conducted and communicated, and where collections are preserved in the public trust. A vital institution in the Denver metropolitan region and the tenth most attended museum in the nation, the DMNS places the values, interests, and needs of the community at the center of everything it does. The Museum envisions an empowered community that loves, understands, and protects the natural world.
In 2017, DMNS began the implementation of its Everyone, Everywhere strategic plan with the objective to increase the number and diversity of people who connect with the Museum around nature and science in ways that are meaningful to them. The plan is anchored by a number of core initiatives that seek to broaden access to DMNS’ resources and expertise. They currently include the Here Better Initiative, No Walls Initiative, the establishment of the Institute for Science and Policy, and the Equity Initiative. Very recently DMNS also received a $25 million gift, the largest in its history, to support the conservation of its scientific collections.
A key member of DMNS’s senior leadership team (SLT), the Vice President for Science provides forward-thinking and collaborative leadership that supports and facilitates scientific research and advances the mission and goals of the DMNS as a whole. The Vice President will model engagement, foster an inclusive and welcoming work culture and will advance the museum’s DEAI efforts both in the division, across the Museum and in the community.They will also be expected to astutely manage, lead and inspire the talented professionals within the science division; carefully manage financial resources, and serve as persuasive and compelling external representative of the museum. This is a full-time position with a starting salary range of $190,000 to $220,000.
The successful candidate will be innovative and creative with an inclusive and broad personal philosophy and a hunger for community engagement. The Vice President will be a seasoned manager with a deep background in science; experience in a museum or with collections is not required.
